On Tuesday November 14th, Providence Day School opened up their 2023 - 2024 Varsity season at home versus a very talented United Faith Christian academy team.  Providence Day started the scoring with a three-pointer from Junior Layla Clark. United Faith answered back with a three-pointer from Senior Jada Richardson to tie the game. The first quarter finished with Providence Day going on an eight to two run that gave them an 11 - 5 lead. The run was led by 6’4” - Junior Ellie Fyans who hit a 10 foot baseline jumper and Senior Sophie Levine with a three pointer.  The second quarter started off with both teams exchanging baskets and the energy picked up, Sophie Levine continued her hot shooting with a three pointer from the corner. United faith Junior. Jonnae Bennet got things going with four straight points, including a three pointer to make the score 14 - 9 with Providence Day holding the lead. United Faith gained momentum, then Sophie Levine pushed the lead back to eight points at 17 - 9. Providence Day led with 5:36 remaining in the first half.  The teams exchanged baskets to close the half. Play was highlighted by a chasedown block by Jada Richardson to save two points in a low scoring, tight game. Providence Day had a nine point lead 22 - 13 at halftime. United Faith Christian Academy started the third quarter aggressively and that turned into an 8 - 2 run in the first three minutes of the period. Eighth grader Jade Bell had five of the points with a nice drive to the basket and a step back three pointer with 4:57 left in the period. Sophie Levine did a great job scoring for Providence Day and was able to get a bankshot to go in transition to extend the lead to 26 - 21 with 2:57 left in the 3rd. Layla Clark hit a free throw to put Providence Day up by four points at 27 - 23. Jonnae Bennett split two defenders on her way to the rim and scored the basket plus the foul.  She hit the free throw to make the score 27 - 26 to close out the 3rd period. United Faith has picked it up on the defensive side and is holding Providence Day to one shot everytime down the court. Providence Day only scored 5 points in the 3rd period.  Sophie Levine got the scoring started in the fourth period at the free throw line by knocking down two of them to extend the lead to 29 - 26.  Jade Bell gives United Faith their first lead of the game at 30 - 29 with a driving layup with 5:21 left on the clock. Providence day school came back and took the lead with a Caroline Swinson three pointer with 3:33 left in the game. United Faith had themselves in a dog fight on the road and needed a big play to get them the victory. Following an offensive rebound the ball came to Junior Devin Long and she stepped into a three pointer from the corner that was good and she was fouled. Devin came back down on the next possession and hit a one dribble pull-up to give United Faith a 36 - 32 lead with 1:15 remaining on the clock. Sophie Levine continued her hot shooting by hitting her 4th three pointer of the day to cut the lead to 37 - 35 with 9.6 seconds remaining in the game. United faith would hold on to a secure their second victory of the season ( 2 - 0 ). Providence Day School fell to ( 0 - 1 ).
